"The
inferior physician treats illness,
the mediocre physician treats
the person,
the superior physician treats society."
- Sun Si Miao (590-628 A.D.)
Chinese medicine has thrived for thousands of years because of its
elegance and potency as a complete system of healing. Its aim is to
bring into balance the cause of any disturbance to our
health, to treat the whole person, not just the symptoms.
Chinese medicine is both poetic and scientific. Its origins are
keen observations of nature. Through ages of studying the dynamics
of the natural world, a healing system evolved which recognizes
these same dynamics in our bodies, minds and souls and brings them
into balance.
The life energy of the body, QI, flows through a series of pathways
called meridians. They cover the surface of the body and join
internally with our organs. Along the meridians are located
hundreds of distinct points, each of which has a specific set of
actions on the body, mind and spirit. In the art of acupuncture,
extremely fine needles are inserted at these points to produce a
therapeutic effect.
Herbal Medicine:
China’s historical writings are a testament to their medicine’s
effectiveness and its evolution: Over the past three millennia,
scholars have produced a continuous stream of literature on the use
of herbs in every disease that has come along. Hundreds of herbal
formulas have been used continually, unchanged for 2000 years-
simply because they work.
Writing an herbal formula, usually six to 12 herbs, is a complex
art, in which each herb’s role and its interaction with the other
herbs must be considered. The final product should effectively go
where it is needed, address the root of the imbalance and also
alleviate symptoms, while being free of side effects. A
personalized formula is usually as effective as a comparable
pharmaceutical drug, with the advantage of supporting one’s core
vitality.
While acupuncture and herbs are excellent for physical problems, the
sages of China said the real strength of the medicine is to assist
us before and beyond sickness, keeping us strong, healthy and
resilient, and further still, empowering us to realize and achieve
our life’s potential.
