Rock Steady Boxing: Please note that Rock Steady Boxing is currently on hold during the Covid-19  Pandemic.

What do I wear?
Wear comfortable, breathable clothes that allow you to move freely.  Most members wear sweatpants or shorts and a t-shirt.  Gym shorts are preferred.

What should I expect?
After your initial assessment, you will be assigned to a class to meet your specific level of Parkinson’s.  On the first day, you will be greeted by the staff and your fellow boxers.  You can expect to meet other people who share the same challenges brought on by PD.  Classes are 75 minutes long, which include dynamic full body stretching, warm-up, boxing technique training, the workout and a full body stretch sequence to finish each class.

What do I need to bring?
It is important to stay properly hydrated, so make sure that you bring plenty of water.  Water bottles with straws are easier to manage with boxing gloves on. Community yoga mats are available, for the stretching segment of the workout.  Many members prefer to bring their own mat.  A small towel is also useful when you are sweating!  If you are assigned to  Level 2, 3 or 4, a corner man is required.

What is a corner man?
If you are entering the class at Level 2, 3 or 4, a corner man is required.  We also encourage a corner man for a Level 1 boxer.  A “corner man” is a spouse, adult child, care partner, friend or a paid care provider, who will assist the boxer, when needed.  Each corner man will also need to sign a standard gym waiver, as they will be working out alongside their boxer whenever their attention is not required.

What if I can’t keep up?
It is important that at any time, if you feel that you cannot keep up or you become frustrated at not being able to perform certain tasks, that you communicate with your coaches.  They can offer modifications and suggestions on alternative training methods to help you focus on specific symptoms or challenges.

Do not do any exercises that you are uncomfortable doing- talk to your coaches first if you are unsure about a specific exercise.  Rock Steady offers an encouraging, nonjudgmental environment that will hopefully allow you to share your specific concerns, when necessary.

How often should I come to class?
It is generally recommended that all boxers attend three times per week in order to see positive results.  Classes will be offered Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons and Tuesday and Thursday mornings.

Is there a “buddy system”?
For the initial launch of this program, everybody will be starting and learning together.  In the future, as new participants start the program, we would like to pair our veteran fighters with the new members.  The “buddy system” will help to provide each new person with the extra support that is needed to learn the fundamentals of the program.

How do I sign up?
The first thing to do is call Coach Patty and schedule a one-on-one assessment . She can be reached at:  443.873.0040, or email here at:  charmcity@rsbaffiliate.com, to set up a time and a date for the assessment.  The assessment will consist of completion of paperwork, functional movement, balance and strength testing and most importantly, time to talk to Coach Patty.  The information gathered will permit Coach Patty to place you in the proper class level.  All participants will sign a standard gym waiver and a note will be sent to your Neurologist and/or Primary Care Physician informing them of your participation in Rock Steady Boxing.

What is the cost of a session?
The cost is $15 per class or a package of 10 classes for $125 (that’s $12.50 per session!).  The fee covers both the boxer and the cornerman.

How do I get to the gym and where do I park?
When you come up the driveway of Coppermine Field house, stay to the LEFT at the fork in the drive and park alongside the building.  There are two entrances to the building, both will be locked until 10 minutes before the class begins.  When facing the building, the entrance to the RIGHT has three stairs to get to the hallway, which is on the LEFT.  The gym is the second door on the LEFT. The other entrance is on the back side of the building.  You will enter the building after walking across the astroturf area.  The boxing gym in down the hall on the RIGHT.
